European Hare
The fleet-footed loner of Klekovača's meadows and clearings.
The wild hare may grow to 30 cm in height, while its length, with the legs stretched out, can run a little over 70 cm. Its colour is a brown with a faint cast of grey, with darker, almost black ear tips, while the fur of the belly is greyish-white. Its weight usually runs around 3.5 kg, and in good conditions it can pass 6 kilograms. There are no marked differences in appearance between males and females.
The hare spends most of its time alone and is seen in groups only during the mating season. It keeps close to the ground where it was born and is very reluctant to move on; only disturbance or a lack of food can drive it to do so. In summer it feeds on herbaceous plants, while in winter it takes twigs with their buds, or the bark of trees.
On the open clearings, meadows and forest edges of Klekovača the hare is common, and its speed and the unpredictable line of its flight make the traditional hunt for hare a lively and dynamic experience.
