Red Fox

Cunning and adaptable, the perennial dweller of the forest edge.

Foxes are mammals of small to middling size belonging to the dog family (Canidae). They have a flat skull, upright triangular ears, a pointed and slightly curved muzzle, and a long, bushy tail.

The fox stands 40 to 50 cm tall, and its length is about 110 cm, of which the tail alone accounts for some 40 cm. Its weight is usually 8 to 10 kg. Foxes may live as long as 15 years, though the average is around 12; in the wild the typical lifespan is one to three years, and a few reach ten. It hunts and feeds according to circumstance — from roots through insects, reptiles and birds to smaller mammals, and its diet may take in eggs and plants as well. Unlike many canids, foxes are not always in a pack; most often they live in small family groups.

On Klekovača the fox is present all year round, an adaptable and resourceful dweller of the forest edges and clearings — a common yet ever-wary sight for the attentive observer.
