Wild Boar
Powerful and cunning big game of the damp forests of Klekovača.
The wild boar is a close relative of the domestic pig; it lives in sounders, mostly around damp forests. It is big game much hunted here, for it is very numerous — its abundance owed to large litters and a lack of natural enemies. It runs exceptionally fast and swims well too. In diet it is an omnivore, meaning that alongside plant food it will eat any animal it can catch, and even carrion.
Adults may stand 90–100 cm tall and measure 120–160 cm in length. Their weight varies with the season and can pass 200 kg in a boar, while sows may top 150 kg. The tusks sit in the jaw so that the lower ones, the cutters, always overlap the upper ones, the whetters, and are sharpened in the process. In a boar the tusks reach their true trophy value only in the fifth year. The coat is brown and blends well into the surroundings, and the young, at birth, wear the characteristic lengthwise stripes that stay with them into the second month.
On Klekovača the wild boar is hunted year-round, most often from a high seat over a baiting site and in driven hunts through the dense thickets — fast, wary and powerful, it ranks among the most thrilling big game of our hunting ground.
