The noble king of the forest, whose autumn belling echoes through the valleys of Klekovača.
The red deer is a ruminant of the family Cervidae. The family numbers 45 species, among them the red deer and the roe deer found on Klekovača. Its most striking feature is the antler, which takes very different forms across the species and, as a rule, is carried only by the males. Antlers are made of bone and grow afresh each year — unlike the horns of the hollow-horned ruminants, which grow continuously throughout life.
Body shape varies: some species are slender, others more thickset. The legs are typically slim and well proportioned, the tail generally short. Most species wear a brown or grey coat, and the young of the larger ones carry spots that only a few keep for life. As ruminants, deer share the digestive anatomy of all their kind. Some species are solitary, but most live in groups whose size depends on the species and its surroundings — most often groups in which one stag gathers several hinds and their offspring and tolerates no rival male nearby.
On Klekovača the red deer is hunted and observed in the great beech and mixed forests, and the autumn belling of the mature stags is one of the most powerful experiences our hunting ground has to offer.
